What’s the Plan?
Let’s test different kinds of wood for hardness. One way to do this is to drive identical nails into different woods. As you might expect, it is easier to drive a nail into softwood than into hardwood.
WHAT YOU NEED:
an adult
hammer
a few long, identical nails
pliers
a variety of trees: oak, maple, ash, hickory, beech, birch, pine, cedar, fir or whatever species are available
a guide to trees
oak, pine, and other types of wood boards of the same thickness
work bench or concrete block
safety glasses
